Volume and Light is thrilled to celebrate Black History Month by honoring excellence in scholarship and leadership. We are also excited to participate in the National Council of Teachers of English annual National African American Read-In. This event was launched in 1989 to promote literacy during Black History Month while supporting black authors in the process.
As literacy is a full-fledged crisis in Nashville and beyond, it’s important that we use this platform to not only raise awareness but also practice what we preach!
So we would love for you to participate in our first-ever online read-in. How will pull this off? Glad you asked! Here’s how:
1. We will select a book (see below)
2. We will have three weeks to read the book
3. Book Discussion via conference call
Simple, right?
Choose one of the books below and the book with the most votes from the Twitter survey will be our Read-In book!
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi
I hope to see parents of school-age kids participating in the Read-In. Modeling – leading by example – is a great teacher!
Stamped from the Beginning! Excellent read for Black History Month. Excellent read for history classes everywhere!!
